The California Department of Education and the California Department of Public Health, Office of Family Planning needed to find a way to educate their constituency due to the significant number of school districts not adhering to the California Education Code. In 2008, with the passage of the Sexual Health Accountability Act, (SHAA) and with the urging of the California Department of Education, the California Department of Public Health, Office of Family Planning created the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Education Curriculum Workgroup (TPPECW). The goal of the TPPECW was to develop the teen pregnancy prevention curricula criteria that would be required of all future funded OFP grantees. These criteria would adhere to the Education Code, the SHAA and current research in the field of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
However, this significant change in policy, that all future funded grantees will adhere to these guidelines and tools; will change how California collaborates on a community and school district level to provide medically accurate, appropriate and comprehensive sexual health education.
