Guam

Building School Health Initiatives”
School District Committee, Parent, And Community Involvement

The Guam Department of Education had launched its District’s Service Learning Program, a local law mandating Guam’s public high school students to acquire 75 hours of Service Learning to complete high school graduation requirements. The HIV project director was able to negotiate through funding source with the school district learning service committee members (school principals), to promote student volunteerism in the community and integrate their experiences into the classroom curriculum (to include health related community services, HIV/AIDS and STD programs, with science and social studies). The students are to assist as tutors, community outreach program activity volunteers, and developing websites for health agencies and NGOs. The kick-off conference was held for two days ending November and December 2011. Through a collaborative effort, there were at least 750 K-12 school educators that were able to attend and support the program. Also, as many as ten exhibitors from the health industry provided current resource materials.

The mission of the service-learning program includes allowing students the opportunity to be a part of the community solutions, not to be perceived as part of the problem; develop students’ sense of citizenship and their role within a democratic society; provide staff development and training for current and future K-12 teachers throughout Guam’s district; support youth leadership, internships, school-to-career, and possible employment; and develop awareness of the non-profit sector within Guam’s Community.
