The Ohio Departments of Education and Health work with the Buckeye Healthy School Alliance developed and maintains a cadre of trainers to provide quality professional development to Ohio’s health and physical education teachers. The Cadre is comprised of university professors from Schools of Health and Wellness and Education. Two of the cadre members, Dr. Susan Telljohann & Dr. Joseph Dake of the University of Toledo, offer a professional development titled, Health Education: A Skills Based Approach. Ohio does not have health education standards; this workshop aligns teaching strategies to the National Health Education Standards. This is a two-day workshop that is designed to teach educators to develop curriculum, teaching units and lesson plans that focus on building the critical thinking and decision making skills students need to establish good health behaviors. The training encourages teachers to look at the YRBS data and issues specific to their community, school population and climate in identifying essential health topics to address within the time constraints of their health education program. The training is hands on and the two sessions are spaced apart allowing teachers to practice strategies acquired during day one and return with reported outcomes in day two. In Ohio, Cleveland has adopted the RSB program that was presented in the last NPD day Ask Us About, however, not all districts allow for a comprehensive approach to sexual health education. This training allows teachers to adapt their approach to sexual health, with integrity and within the parameters of their district policy.
