Hawaii’s ethnic population requires various learning strategies for instructing our diverse youth. In collaboration with the Micronesian Cultural Awareness Project, two trainings were held addressing culturally sensitive approaches in working with Micronesian youth and their families. Content included the geography, people and history of Micronesia as well learning to incorporate literacy strategies to address the dynamics of family relationships, education, sexuality and other health-related topics when instructing Micronesian youth.
The Hawaii HIV Prevention Project held its first 3-day training addressing the needs of the Lesbian, Bi-Sexual & Transgender (LGBT) Youth in Hawaii conducted by internationally recognized trainer and consultant, Dr. Elizabeth Schroeder from Rutgers’s University. The content focused on the fundamentals of sexual orientation, gender identity and how to ensure that all young people and their families feel safe in schools and communities. Forty-seven (47) community agencies attended on Day One with fifty-three (53) secondary teachers, counselors, principals on Day Two. Day Three included twelve (12) teachers who participated in an on-line professional development course. To support sustainability in our educational system, further professional development courses for teachers are being held.
